Ian Rapoport of NFL Network broke the news on Thursday that the Baltimore Ravens and quarterback Lamar Jackson have agreed to a five-year, record-breaking deal that will see him return to the team. Rapoport notes that the two sides struck an agreement and later reported Jackson will become the NFL’s highest-paid player, eclipsing the $255 million contract that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts signed on April 17. Jackson will make $260 million.
Jackson commented on the contract extension Thursday, showing his excitement to get a deal done and he’s set for life with Jackson’s contract guaranteeing $185 million, according to Josina Anderson. The two sides have been embroiled in intense negotiations over the past several months and there was a lot of drama associated with a potential extension. It late March, he announced that he had requested to be traded from Baltimore, noting that the team “has not been interested in meeting my value” in contract discussions. The news dropped just prior to the 2023 NFL Entry Draft and it was big.
What’s so incredible about the deal is that Jackson fired his agent and he and his mother — who he hired to help negotiate his contract worked all of this out. Sources told ESPN’s Jamison Hensley that Jackson wanted “a fully guaranteed deal like the one given to Deshaun Watson last year by the Cleveland Browns.” He turned down Baltimore’s extension offer last year before playing the 2022 season on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal.
He is now the highest-paid QB and he avoided the 3% agent fee and gave the $7.8 million to his mom. This all comes after he slipped all the way to the 32nd pick in the 2018 draft.
