Justin Verlander Returns to Detroit Tigers on One-Year Deal

The Detroit Tigers have officially announced the return of one of baseball’s most iconic pitchers. Justin Verlander, 43 next week, has agreed to a one-year contract to rejoin the team that drafted him in 2004 and where he spent 13 seasons.

Verlander receives $13M, $11M deferred, with payments starting in 2030, the team announced.

According to reports from ESPN and Tigers-focused analysis sites, he is expected to return as a starter, giving young pitchers an invaluable presence alongside his wealth of experience. Bob Nightengale writes, ‘The Detroit Tigers’ vaunted starting rotation: Tarik Skubal, Framber Valdez, Justin Verlander, Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize, Reese Olson. One fan wrote of the rotation, “Sure, on paper that rotation looks stacked,” but then suggested it’s more hype than substance. Skubal, Mize, and Olson still have huge injury and consistency questions. He also noted that Verlander at 43 isn’t going to carry anyone. “Detroit might be setting itself up for heartbreak if they rely on names over performance.”

Verlander’s career is decorated with some of baseball’s most prestigious honors. He is a two-time World Series champion (2017, 2022), three-time Cy Young Award winner (2011, 2019, 2022), and 2011 American League MVP. He also earned ALCS MVP (2017), Babe Ruth Award (2017), and seven Players’ Choice Awards, including AL Outstanding Pitcher and Comeback Player. A nine-time All-Star, Verlander’s achievements cement him as one of the game’s all-time greats.
