Jon Rahm is back on top as the World Number’s One ranked golfer. Following his win on Sunday at the Genesis Invitational, Rahm continues to make the game of golf look easy. He’s earned three wins in five starts in 2023 and he remains #1 in FedEx Cup standings.
He offered a masterclass on how to finish out a tournament on Sunday. Rahm and runner-up Max Homa battled back and forth all day at the Riviera Country Club, but a final-round 65 was enough to seal the deal. With his win at The Genesis Invitational, he joins Tiger Woods (5x) and Justin Thomas (2016-17) as the only players over the last 40 years to win at least three times within their first six starts of a PGA tour season.
Rahm said following the tournament, “That was a tough week and a tough Sunday. Max battled out there and Patrick kind of gave us a scare, but I’m just glad I could come through at the end.” He took a three-shot lead into the final round but saw that wiped out after 10 holes and fell a stroke behind Homa following his third bogey of the day on the 12th. He battled back and by the 18th hole, Rahm held a two-shot lead.
He noted, “I told myself if I can finish the last six holes under par I knew I would have a chance. At that point you’ve just got to find the positive and change focus and I went a bit more on the attack.” As for how he’s fared so far this season and reaching the milestone of 10 wins: “…to reach that milestone of double-digit wins is pretty incredible. And to do it at a golf course with this legacy, this history and hosted by the man himself, Tiger Woods, it’s a true honour.”
Rahm’s earnings for the 2023 season have already totaled $9.8 million and it’s only February. Less than 10 golfers have ever made as much in an entire season. The way he’s playing, there was no doubt he’d reach double-digit PGA Tour victories. His stat line is incredible: top seven in all five of his starts, three wins, 93 under in 20 rounds, and a 67.1 scoring average are among a few of the highlights.
