Considering the similarities between Austin Theory and John Cena, it’s logical to assume that the former 16-time World Champion saw something in the current United States Champion that made him want to pick Theory as his WrestleMania 39 opponent. That said, Cena is denying any speculation that he pitched for the match with WWE or that even had anything to do with putting these two WWE Superstars in the same ring.
During a recent interview with Associated Press, Cena talked about everything from his relationship with Vince McMahon to the potential sale of WWE, his return to WWE, and his feelings on his upcoming match with Theory. It was assumed that Cena had some say in choosing the program he wanted to work at The Showcase of the Immortals, but the now-Hollywood star denied it. Cena pointed out that his upcoming WM match wasn’t his idea. Saying he’s not the kind of talent to politic for specific opponents or try to get his way with certain storylines, he is simply doing what he’s been told to do by WWE.
Cena was asked why he would want to work with Theory and responded, “You would be surprised at my answer. Because that’s what I was told would happen. I don’t do that, I don’t say, I want to do this. I want to work with that person. I don’t ever do that. I’ve never done that.” He added that he just does the best with the program he’s being given and tries to get over his storyline to the best of his ability. He noted he just does what he’s told to do and instead of dictating terms, he tries to put on the best performance possible.
He said, “I don’t pick opponents, but I love to tell stories. I didn’t pick Austin Theory but I certainly spoke from the heart.”
The story in a few weeks is that Theory is trying to prove he’s the “now” in WWE and that Cena is the past. Meanwhile, Cena suggested in a Raw promo that Theory isn’t ready for the pressure that will come with facing him, win or lose. The result of this match will be fascinating because if Cena is telling the truth and honestly doesn’t pitch anything to WWE, that means he’s got no issue doing the job for Theory if WWE decides they want to put the current champ over at the former champ’s expense.
