An extremely disappointing 2026 season will likely result in big changes for the Toronto Blue Jays this offseason, and there may be no bigger potential departure than George Springer.

Springer has been a fan favorite and big-time producer throughout his time in Toronto, and while he’s shown in recent years to still has plenty of pop left in his bat, his future with the team and in MLB as a whole is uncertain.

He recently opened up about those possibilites to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet:

“It’s emotional to think about it. Very, very grateful to our fans, this team, this organization. Obviously this is not the way that we all wanted it to end. But if it is, I’m going to do my best to embrace being back home for one last time and making sure that I do anything I can to reciprocate to the fans… I don’t know (If he wants to keep playing). I love this organization. I loved being a Blue Jay. I’ve loved every single bit of being here. I haven’t really gotten that far yet. I’ve kind of taken every day with these guys in stride.”

The 37-year-old Springer is a pending UFA playing in the sixth and final year of the six-year, $150 million contract he signed to join the Blue Jays in free agency in 2021. He’s batting .251 with 15 home runs and 54 RBI through 124 games played this season.

Losing Springer would be an emotional exit for everyone involved, but at some point it becomes time to move on. If Toronto wants to bring in an impact bat or two this winter, there may simply not be a spot for the veteran, who is now primarily a DH.

Whatever does happen, expect a massive and deserved ovation for Springer from the Blue Jays faithful this weekend at Rogers Centre.
