The Los Angeles Lakers will be entering the offseason without knowing who’s going to be their starting point guard next season. The team will be going through several changes this offseason, and a point guard will be on their to do list. Below are four options who could fill this role and become the Lakers starting point guard.
D’Angelo Russell
D’Angelo Russell was the starting point guard this past season, and has a player option worth $18,696,307. After a good season there is a decent chance that Russell declines. Even so, the Lakers would be one of the teams looking to sign him. He already has chemistry with the roster and would be able to fit in and let the team hit the ground running at the start of next season. They may face some competition from other teams, but this would be a solid option.
Gabe Vincent
Gabe Vincent had a disappointing season for the Lakers this year, but he may become their next starter. If D’Angelo Russell opts out of his contract, the Lakers will try to resign him, or trade for an upgrade. However, due to their lack tradable first round picks, they may have a difficult time doing so. Vincent is under contract and may be launched into the starting role for lack of better option. This is not the ideal option for the Lakers, and if this happens, they’ll have to hope he can go back to his Miami form.
Trae Young
Trae Young is rumoured to be available from the Atlanta Hawks and is a target for the Lakers. He would add a third star to this team, a much needed scoring punch, and a strong shooting option. It will cost a significant amount for the Lakers to acquire, but could be worth it if it makes them a contender. Young would be young enough to continue to be part of the Lakers future with Anthony Davis after LeBron leaves. This would provide a strong option for the team.
Chris Paul
There’s rumours that the Golden State Warriors could release Chris Paul. His contract is non-guaranteed, and he’s owed $30 million this season. Upon a release, the Lakers would be a team interested in signing him. He’s close friends with LeBron and has lots of experience to add to the team. While he’s nowhere near what he used to be, but still has plenty he can offer to a team.
The Lakers have hopes of returning to championship contention next season. To do so, they’ll need to solidify their point guard position. One of these four options could be their starter next year.
