Expect Nick Robertson to Leave the Maple Leafs

Given that he was a healthy scratch for most of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 2025 postseason, it’s pretty clear that Nick Robertson isn’t on new head coach Craig Berube’s “keep list.” With his upcoming expired contract and restricted free agency looming, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Robertson re-signs with the Maple Leafs.

Sure, the team could force his hand by extending a qualifying offer, but why would they? The writing seems to be on the wall—for both the team and the player.

Robertson Needs a Better Chance than the Maple Leafs Gave Him

In one way, I’m happy to see Robertson move on. He deserves a chance to make an impact somewhere else. In another way, I’m genuinely sad to see him go. I really thought he could add something special to this Maple Leafs team.

There was a time when Robertson was one of the brightest young prospects in the organization—quick, skilled, and driven by a work ethic that belied his size. But as the Maple Leafs evolved, they went in a different direction. And perhaps, so did Robertson. Last offseason, he had to be persuaded to re-sign.

Robertson Was the Wrong Fit at the Wrong Time

Ultimately, Robertson’s two biggest battles in Toronto were against his own body and a shifting team identity. Injuries repeatedly robbed him of momentum. And as the team prioritized size, grit, and defensive responsibility, Robertson’s small-scorer profile became less aligned with what the Maple Leafs needed.

What I’ll miss most about Robertson is the hope he represented. Every team needs a player who plays like he’s got something to prove. That’s what Robertson did—when healthy. His engine never quit. But at 5-foot-9 and constantly rehabbing, the hill was always steep. Even when he scored in the postseason’s second round, he sat out the next game.

Nick Robertson sat out most of the second-round series, although he scored a Game 5 goal.

Robertson Moving On Might Be What’s Best

Nick Robertson might never become a star, but he could still be a good NHL player. However, he would likely never be that if he stayed in Toronto.

If he moves on, I’ll be rooting for him. Sometimes, the player and the team must go their separate ways to grow. For Robertson, the writing is on the wall. That doesn’t mean he won’t have fans who’ll miss him. I know I will.
