Golf legend Tiger Woods has officially ended his longstanding, iconic partnership with Nike. The separation marks the conclusion of a remarkable 27-year relationship, one of the most lucrative endorsement deals in sports history.
Woods, who turned pro at the age of 20, initially signed with Nike, and their collaboration has been synonymous with success. The endorsement deal, spanning 27 years, included a staggering $500 million in payments and generated billions in sales, leaving an indelible mark on the sports marketing landscape. Nike, in a statement to Woods, expressed gratitude, acknowledging his role in challenging conventions and pushing boundaries within the sport of golf. They wrote, “It was a hell of a round, Tiger.”
Tiger Woods, in his statement, reflected on the remarkable journey of the past 27 years. He thanked Phil Knight, Nike’s visionary founder, along with the dedicated Nike employees and fellow athletes who contributed to the success of their partnership. Despite bidding farewell to this chapter, Woods hinted at the anticipation of a new one, cryptically stating, “Yes, there will certainly be another chapter. See you in LA!”
He’ll be part of next month’s Genesis Invitational, the tournament he hosts at Riviera Country Club and where he is expected to play.
Woods Moves Onto the Next Phase Of His Golf Career.. Without Nike
In 2016, Nike exited the golf equipment business, prompting Woods to secure separate agreements with Bridgestone for golf balls and TaylorMade for clubs. Recent reports suggest that Nike might be completely withdrawing from the golf industry. As such, it makes sense that this partnership would end.
As Woods embarks on a new phase, there will be questions about potential future endorsements and partnerships. Many of which might have to do with his son, Charlie. Golf enthusiasts around the world will undoubtedly be watching closely as this golfing icon continues to script his legacy in the sport.
