During a recent episode of the Spittin’ Chiclets Rumor Boyz show, former professional hockey player Matt Murley stirred up a substantial rumor that has since garnered attention among NHL insiders, not to mention Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks fans. Murley suggested that there is ongoing chatter about star forward Elias Pettersson potentially leaving the Canucks for the Blackhawks.
The reasons, if true, are obvious. The Blackhawks are pegged to be a team of the future. With Connor Bedard wowing as a rookie and likely to win the Calder Trophy, it’s only a matter of time before the Blackhawks try to build around him. What better way to do that than to land a megastar? Pettersson alongside Bedard has a nice ring to it. Pettersson is tracking for an impressive 98 points this season, boasting 13 goals and 30 assists in 36 games, ranking 10th in NHL scoring.
What Exactly Was the Pettersson to Blackhawks Rumor?
“Do not be surprised if you see Elias Pettersson try to make his way to the Chicago Blackhawks to be with Bedard next year,” Murley said. He added there’s “a lot of talk” about William Nylander signing with the Blackhawks, too.
While many analysts and fans were quick to dismiss the rumor as highly improbable, respected insider Elliotte Friedman addressed the speculation on the latest 32 Thoughts podcast. Friedman acknowledged Murley as a credible source with reliable contacts, suggesting that while the rumor might be premature, it shouldn’t be completely discounted. Murley didn’t seem overly confident when he shared the rumor. He explained, “Restricted free agent though, so I’m not exactly sure how that goes… I could see him moving out of there and what a spot to go to, and that’s a team that has the cap space, right?” Friedman was quick to give credit to Murley for understanding that the RFA part of the equation makes this complicated, to say the least.
Friedman also said Murley wasn’t an idiot and he’s the kind of person people talk to about things. In other words, he didn’t believe the rumor was pulled out of thin air.
Is This Going to Require Elias Pettersson React?
According to Friedman, Pettersson holds the key to putting an end to the speculation. Suggesting this wasn’t likely something that anyone wanted floating out there in the hockey universe, the reality is, the Canucks appear prepared to offer Pettersson a significant contract when he’s ready. They want this done. Most people believe Pettersson wants this done too. He’s simply taking his time.
The issue with taking time is that it opens the door to rumors like this.
Despite speculation about him leaving while the Canucks are performing well and leading their division not aligning with logical expectations, rumors will swirl. And, Friedman suggests people change their minds all the time. It’s not possible to know exactly what Pettersson is thinking until he comes out and either says something or signs.
Pettersson’s current focus may not be on considering a move to the Blackhawks, especially with the Canucks enjoying success and leading their division. Still, Friedman highlighted the pressure and attention that comes with being a star player in a market like Vancouver, suggesting that Pettersson may be cautious about fueling unnecessary storylines.
Friedman even floated the possibility of Chicago making an offer sheet for Pettersson. But, given the substantial contract he’s likely to demand, acquiring him would necessitate surrendering four first-round picks. Regardless of Pettersson’s skill, sacrificing such crucial draft assets in the midst of a rebuild is unwise.
The Pettersson Rumor Isn’t A Serious One, But It Might Be Worth Watching
While the credibility of the rumor remains uncertain, the fact that Murley is known for reliable reporting adds an element of anticipation for fans seeking more clarity. This isn’t likely something to be taken all that seriously. At the same time, perhaps it’s not one that fans simply throw away as meaningless.
Perhaps more likely is a player Friedman drew a parallel to in William Nylander. He’s maintained his commitment to the Toronto Maple Leafs, but skepticism remains and he’s free to sign wherever he wants at the end of the season. If Chicago is willing to pay and they don’t have to give up assets to acquire him, that makes more sense.
