De’Aaron Fox Refusing to Sign Extension With Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings have built their team around De’Aaron Fox for years now. Unfortunately for them, Fox has been refusing to sign an extension with the team. He wants to see the long-term vision for the team before he commits to them. This could be troublesome for the Kings.

Fox comes off a season in which he averaged 26.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 5.6 assists. The season before, he made the All-NBA third team. After being drafted fifth overall in 2017, the Kings were so impressed with his potential that they committed to keeping him over Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton. The Kings traded Haliburton for Domantas Sabonis in 2022. This commitment was made with the intention of Fox being the King’s franchise star, but this may not be the case.

What’s Next for the Kings and Fox?

The Kings missed the playoffs last season, and Fox is 26 years old. As he enters the prime of his career, he’ll want to have a chance at contending. Fox has two seasons remaining on his contract, then he hits free agency. If the Kings are unable to convince Fox of their potential for long-term success, they may have to trade him before he leaves for nothing.

De’Aaron Fox will not sign an extension with the Kings

If this happens the Kings will receive a haul for him. Fox is a great player, and every team will be calling to acquire him. A few teams stick out, however.

Fox originally comes from New Orleans, so the Pelicans are an obvious match. A homecoming to pair Fox with Zion Williamson could be a great fit. The Pelicans will be looking to add more draft capital this offseason as well since they’re likely trading Brandon Ingram.

The Los Angeles Lakers are both looking for a point guard, and a star to pair with Anthony Davis in a post LeBron James era. The issue with the Lakers, however, is the lack of draft capital.

The San Antonio Spurs are another team to watch. With rookie superstar Victor Wembanyama seeming like the future of the league, the Spurs will look to surround him with complimentary pieces. Fox has a great skillset to fit alongside Wembanyama.

The best option for the Sacramento Kings is to try and make upgrades to the team immediately. They need success next season. If there isn’t success, Fox might not be convinced, and instead of letting him walk after another year, the Kings may have to trade him. Before that happens though, the Kings have to find a way to get De’Aron Fox to stop refusing their extension offers.
