Mike Trout has defined a generation of baseball and the Los Angeles Angels have refused to trade him over the years. But as the team continues to decline, and Mike Trout continues to age, now could be the time they choose to finally make a deal. Tim Kawakami has suggested that the San Francisco Giants should trade for Mike Trout.
This season Trout is hitting .220 with a .867 OPS. His MVP seasons are behind him, but he remains a great player. The Giants sit at 33-34 this season and are currently in a wild-card spot. The addition of Mike Trout would add a huge bat to the lineup, as well as a plus defender in a very large outfield in Oracle Park.
What Would A Trade Look Like
Trout is 32 years old, turning 33 this season. He’s making just over $37 million through the 2030 season. Unfortunately for the Angels, this contract, at this age, limits any potential return they could get. They can look at the 2017 Giancarlo Stanton for reference. However, this is exactly what makes this trade a huge risk, and incredibly appealing for the Giants.
Taking on the entire contract means they won’t need to give much for assets. It would raise their payroll tremendously, but the Giants have no issues with this, typically being near the top of the league in payroll. The Giants could look to get the deal done without giving up premium assets.
What the Giants Would Send Back
Aeverson Arteaga could be a useful prospect here. Ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Giants’ number 14 prospect, the shortstop was difficult to scout before he signed due to playing in Venezuela during the pandemic. While only projected to develop into a decent player, he could act as a lottery ticket for the Angels, who can hope that the lack of scouting leads to Arteaga being overlooked.
Wade Meckler, the Giants’ number 16 prospect, could also work well. Consistently compared to Steven Kwan, Meckler has good contract ability. While possessing below-average power and not a stellar defender, Meckler is not projected to become a star. Playing the outfield, he becomes expendable when acquiring Mike Trout.
This would give the Angels two prospects who have the potential to be MLB players. While not stars, the Angels can’t expect much better than this given Trout’s age and contract. He is no longer in his prime but is still a productive player. This could be the possible trade framework if the San Francisco Giants trade for Mike Trout.
