Los Angeles Clippers star forward Paul George has a player option for the upcoming season. It appears more than likely that he’ll opt out, and if he does, the Golden State Warriors could sign Paul George.
This situation would only occur if the Warriors lose Klay Thompson. The Warriors have built around their core for a decade, but it’s coming to an end. There’s a real possibility for Thompson to leave, as teams like the Orlando Magic have an interest in the player. To shift from Thompson to George would be a great move for the Warriors.
George’s Fit in Golden State
Paul George provides the Warriors with a high-level scorer and an elite defender. This is similar to what Thompson provides, but Thompson’s game has declined in recent years. Klay is a better shooter than George, but his decline means that George becomes an immediate upgrade on both ends of the court.
George will play on the wing, which would pair well with Steph Curry running the point guard position. George has the ability to play off-ball, which will allow the team to space the floor. With the ball primarily in Curry’s hands, the Warriors need players around the rest of the court who can provide shooting.
When the ball isn’t in Curry’s hands, George has the ability to be the primary ball handler. He can create for his teammates, adding a second playmaking option that the Warriors previously lacked. This would add another level to the Warriors’ offensive scheme, allowing them to become more difficult to guard.
On defense, George is elite and can guard several positions. George can match up with the best offensive wing players, and alongside Draymond Green, provide a stellar defensive wing duo.
If Klay Thompson leaves, Paul George would be a phenomenal addition for the Warriors. He provides, scoring, playmaking, and defense. While he lacks Thompson’s shooting, it’s a clear upgrade. While there may be other options, if the Golden State Warriors sign Paul George in free agency, it will be an excellent addition.
