Campbell Bummed He’s Not Playing vs Former Maple Leafs Team

Jack Campbell is back in Toronto as a netminder, this time playing for the Edmonton Oilers as the Oilers come into town and try to get another two points in a Pacific Division race where wins and losses are of the utmost importance.

Campbell said it was nice to be back but was disappointed that he isn’t going to be the starter against his old team. “I definitely appreciate all the love they’ve given me.” He said he holds himself to a pretty high standard and that his season hasn’t gone the way he’d have liked thus far. He understands his play hasn’t warranted him being in the net against his old team, but he wants his teammates to get a big two points.

Campbell said he got a chance on Saturday to see take in some of the great memories he made when he was part of the Leafs but his focus now is on trying to make new memories as a member of the Oilers. When asked what it’s like to be part of a tandem with Stuart Skinner, Campbell said it’s great for the team to have options. Campbell knows that he hasn’t performed to the level he’d like but he’s confident he’ll get his game going. He didn’t give him a ton of advice about playing his former team, just that he should play his game.

The Maple Leafs plan to play a video tribute to Campbell during Saturday’s game. Clearly, he’ll smile and wave and be appreciative of the honor, but no doubt, he’d rather be on the ice playing his old team and trying to shut down an offense that is arguably as potent as his current team’s.

When some of the players on the Leafs were asked about playing their old teammate, Mitch Marner said, “It’d be very cool for him to play. I’m sure the love he’s going to get from our fan base tomorrow is going to be pretty epic.” When asked for his comments, Auston Matthews responded, “It would be fun to go against him … definitely a game he’d be up for.”

Unfortunately, the Oilers just aren’t prepared to give the net to Campbell who has been shaky in his last few starts, while Skinner has been solid. The points mean too much and the Oilers are trying to close out a four-game road trip with another important victory. They are four points out of being in the top spot in the Pacific Division with only 16 games left on the regular season calendar.
