Beat Writer Lists 5 Potential DH Options for Red Sox

The 2024 MLB Season is quickly approaching, but the Boston Red Sox are not done making roster moves. A specific need that they have is a DH, and they are likely to add one before the start of the season. Because of this, MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo discussed five potential DH free-agent options for the club. Let’s discuss each player now.

Adam Duvall

Adam Duvall is certainly a familiar face to the Red Sox. He spent last season in Boston, and he fit in excellently. In 92 games, he had 21 home runs, 51 RBIs, and a .247 batting average. Had he stayed healthy, he likely would have hit the 30-home run mark.

Boston Red Sox DH options

Cotillo noted that earlier this offseason, the Red Sox were a frontrunner for Duvall. Yet, he then added that his free agency “isn’t as close to a resolution.” While that does not mean that a return to the Red Sox won’t happen, it is far from set in stone, at least right now.

Garrett Cooper

Cotillo later brought up Garrett Cooper as a possible option for the Red Sox. He noted that Cooper would be a good first baseman to bring in for when the Red Sox face lefty pitchers. Cooper, 33, appeared in 123 games last season, split between the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres. He set new career highs with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs. With that, he had a .251 batting average.

C.J. Cron

C.J. Cron was also discussed as a possible target for the Red Sox. The 34-year-old had 17 home runs, 65 RBIs, and a .248 batting average in 71 games last season with the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Angels.

When healthy, Cron is a consistent 25 to 30-home run threat. Because of that and his tendency to pull the ball, he could be a very impactful player playing at Fenway Park.

Donovan Solano

Cotillo then discussed Donovan Solano as a potential fit for the Red Sox. He is the complete opposite of a player like Cron. He does not hit too many home runs, but he hits well for contact. With that, he can play second base, first base, and third base. Thus, he offers great versatility.

The 36-year-old spent last season with the Minnesota Twins, where he had five home runs, 38 RBIs, and a .282 batting average.

Randal Grichuk

The final potential target Cotillo brought up was Randal Grichuk. The 32-year-old spent last season split between the Rockies and Angels. In 118 games, he had 16 home runs, 44 RBIs, and a .267 batting average.

If the Red Sox signed Grichuk. he would give them more depth in the outfield. That certainly would not be a bad thing after how their offseason has gone.

It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox end up bringing in one of these five players from here. While none of them would be massive additions, they would surely improve their group.
