With Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Max Fried among others injured and out of the New York Yankees lineup, they’re relying especially on left-handed sluggers Cody Bellinger, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Ben Rice to carry the load.
Bellinger and Rice have continued their extremely productive seasons, though Chisholm Jr. hasn’t been quite as effective or consistent, and his antics on Monday night only added to Yankees fans’ frustrations with the star infielder.
During the bottom of the fifith inning down 4-1 in Detroit against the Tigers, Chisholm Jr. was seen sucking on a lollipop while playing second base. Manager Aaron Boone didn’t see it in the moment, but after learning about it postgame he made it clear that won’t happen again under his watch.
Here was what the skipper had to say during an appearance on Talkin’ Yanks on Tuesday:
“Oh yeah, that pisses me off. I didn’t know about it until after the game, so he and I talked about that. That won’t be going on.
That was the second time? There was another time? Yeah, that’s… I’m not on that,”
The 28-year-old Chisholm Jr. is hitting .226 with 11 home runs and 31 RBIs while adding 23 stolen bases through his first 74 games this season. He’s a pending UFA playing on the one-year, $10.2 million contract extension he signed with the Yankees in January.

It was actually the second time Chisholm Jr. has done so this season, having also been spotted with a lollipop in his mouth during an at-bat in Boston back in April.
There’s a first for everything, and this certainly feels like one of those moments. That said, it’s also very likely the last time we see it — at least as long as Boone is in charge in New York.
