The appetizer is over. College football’s first full weekend arrives with ranked teams, intriguing nonconference games, and several programs facing meaningful tests before September has really begun. Rather than trying to watch everything, here are five games worth building your Labour Day weekend around.
Boise State at No. 2 Oregon
Saturday afternoon gives us our first look at one of the country’s legitimate national championship contenders. Oregon opens the season ranked No. 2 in the AP poll, behind only defending national champion Ohio State. Boise State, meanwhile, gets an immediate opportunity to measure itself against one of the most talented teams in the country.
Oregon should be favored heavily at Autzen Stadium, but that’s not really the point. Early-season games are often about discovering whether preseason expectations match reality. If Oregon intends to challenge for a national championship, it should look like one of the country’s best teams immediately.
Clemson at No. 11 LSU
This is Saturday’s headliner. Clemson travels to Baton Rouge for a rematch of last year’s opener, when LSU went into Clemson and escaped with a 17-10 victory. This time, LSU gets the home-field advantage—and begins the Lane Kiffin era in Death Valley.
Clemson enters with considerably more uncertainty. The Tigers are replacing experience at quarterback and several other positions following a disappointing 7-6 season. That makes this an immediate measuring stick for both programs. LSU gets to show whether Kiffin can turn a revamped roster into a contender. Clemson gets an opportunity to erase some of the disappointment surrounding last season.
Another story is in this game. Clemson has notified LSU that playing former professional players on Saturday may breach the game contract between the schools, per a copy of an email obtained by @YahooSports.
Wisconsin vs. No. 4 Notre Dame
The setting alone gets this game onto the list. Notre Dame and Wisconsin meet Sunday night at Lambeau Field, with the Fighting Irish playing there for the first time. It’s only the third college football game ever hosted at the home of the Green Bay Packers.
Notre Dame also enters with unfinished business. The Irish won 10 consecutive games to finish last season 10-2 but were still left outside the College Football Playoff. Wisconsin went only 5-8 last season, so Notre Dame should be the stronger team. Still, a Big Ten opponent at Lambeau Field makes this considerably more interesting than the typical season-opening tune-up.
No. 24 Louisville vs. No. 9 Ole Miss
This might be the most underrated game of the weekend. Ole Miss enters 2026 ranked ninth after the best season in program history. The Rebels won 13 games and reached the College Football Playoff semifinal last season. Now they open against another ranked opponent.
Louisville provides an immediate test, while Ole Miss gets its first opportunity to prove last season wasn’t an anomaly. The neutral-site matchup in Nashville also gives this one the atmosphere of something considerably bigger than a normal Week 1 game.
No. 19 SMU at Florida State
Then Monday night gives us one final game before the opening weekend ends. SMU enters ranked No. 19 and travels to Tallahassee for an ACC matchup with Florida State. That makes this different from most season openers: the result immediately matters in the conference standings.
For SMU, it’s an opportunity to justify its preseason ranking on the road. For Florida State, beating a ranked opponent would immediately change the tone surrounding its season.
Either way, somebody begins September with a significant ACC win. Week 1 isn’t loaded from top to bottom, but it gives us considerably more than Week 0. Clemson-LSU is the marquee matchup, Notre Dame-Wisconsin provides the spectacle, and Louisville-Ole Miss might give us the best game.
That’s enough to make the first full weekend of college football feel like football season has actually arrived.
