As a pending free agent in the final year of his contract, it’s very possible that George Springer’s time with the Toronto Blue Jays could soon be coming to an end.
A puzzling 50-59 record through 109 games has the Blue Jays poised to sell off players on expiring contracts, and a surge at the plate over the last month has particularly reignited interest from contending teams in Springer.
One of those interested suitors, according to insider Jon Heyman, who would love to get it’s hands on Springer is Toronto’s bitter rival, the New York Yankees.
“Yeah, the Yankees, right-handed-hitting outfielder, I think George Springer would be a guy that they’d love to get. Would he go to New York? I mean, he was an Astro all those years. He was a Blue Jay. I’m not so sure that he would. I mean, I’m just doing an educated guess here. I’m thinking he may not go. He has 10-and-5 veto rights over a trade. But that’s a guy that’s been a clutch hitter throughout his career, a great guy. He’s from Connecticut, so you think maybe the Yankees?”
The 36-year-old Springer is playing in the final year of the six-year, $150 million contract he signed to join the Blue Jays as a free agent back in 2021. He’s hit 12 home runs with 34 RBI while batting .234 across 78 games so far this season.
Springer’s no-trade clause, combined with the idea of dealing him within the AL East, makes it seem rather unlikely that Toronto and New York strike on such a deal.
That being said, if the Yankees offer up a quality prospect or a young MLB-ready player, the Blue Jays may have to consider it. As much as it would sting, it’s in the organization’s best interest to move Springer, no matter the destination, rather than hold on and have him walk for nothing
