As training camps get underway around the NFL, we have our first big-name trade request.
It was revealed on Monday night that star defensive tackle Vita Vea has requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after contract extension talks stalled.
Insider Adam Schefter shared the latest details in an article for ESPN.
“Two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Vita Vea has requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after talks on a contract extension have stalled, his agent, Collin Roberts, told ESPN on Monday.
Vea was a hold-in at the team’s mandatory minicamp last month because of his contract situation. Coach Todd Bowles said he wasn’t concerned at that time, calling it ‘part of the business,'”
The 31-year-old Vea is entering the fourth and final year of the four-year, $71 million contract extension he signed with the Buccaneers back in 2022. He recorded 4.5 sacks and 34 total tackles (16 solo, 18 assists) in 17 games last regular season.
Vea has spent his entire career in Tampa Bay after being selected 12th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, so if a new deal can be worked out, you’d have to assume that is the preferred outcome for both sides.
If not, a trade could become the only option, and a report from Ted Nguyen has already suggested a California team or the Las Vegas Raiders as potential landing spots.
“From a source: he wants to go to a California tam or the Raiders,”
That would put the Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, and Raiders among Vea’s desired destinations.
There is still plenty of time before the regular season begins on Wednesday, September 9, so this situation could drag out before a resolution is reached.
