The Golden State Warriors are swinging for the fences — and Draymond Green just pulled the trigger to make it possible.
Following news that the Warriors were gearing up to trade for Anthony Davis, and then sign LeBron James, Green is declining his $27.7 million player option to become a free agent, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. The move was designed entirely to give Golden State the financial flexibility to pursue one of the most ambitious roster constructions in NBA history.
The plan, reported by Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor and confirmed by Charania: trade Jimmy Butler’s contract to the Washington Wizards for Anthony Davis, then sign LeBron James using the mid-level exception. That could make Butler a buyout candidate. Butler believes he’ll return from injury better than ever.
But this isn’t about Butler. It’s about the Warriors building one of the most dominant foursomes in NBA history. A Big Four of Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Draymond Green, and Anthony Davis in Golden State — a lineup that would instantly make the Warriors championship favorites and send shockwaves through the league.
Brian Windhorst reports the Lakers have expressed interest in re-signing James and want to meet with him — but there’s a catch. “The way it was explained to me, LeBron has been unavailable for a meeting with the Lakers,” Windhorst said. “He has been playing golf basically every day, whether it’s in France or Akron, Ohio.” With free agency opening June 30, Los Angeles is running out of time.
Is This Really Happening? Could LeBron Join the Warriors?
Green opting out — alongside his shared agent with LeBron and their long friendship — is being read as a significant signal. “This is potentially a very big domino,” Windhorst said. “This opens the door for the Warriors to use their MLE with $15 million… I would just say, stay tuned.”
The Warriors are all in. The question now is whether LeBron is in too.
