The Toronto Raptors remain interested in a reunion with Kawhi Leonard, but another team with a connection to the superstar forward has entered the mix.
According to a recent report, the Dallas Mavericks have emerged as a suitor for Leonard, spearheaded by new president Masai Ujiri, who, of course, brought him to Toronto back in 2018.
Christian Clark, Dan Woike and Sam Amick of The Athletic wrote:
“Dallas Mavericks president Masai Ujiri has interest in reuniting with Kawhi Leonard, multiple league sources with knowledge of Dallas’ thinking told The Athletic.
The Mavericks and LA Clippers have discussed a deal that would send the seven-time All-Star to Dallas for a package that would include P.J. Washington, Klay Thompson and draft picks, said league sources granted anonymity to describe deliberations still in progress,”
This comes hours after insider Jake Fischer reported that the Raptors and Los Angeles Clippers held real trade discussions over the weekend surrounding a deal that would send Leonard back to Toronto, with Brandon Ingram and RJ Barrett mentioned as potential return pieces.
“The Raptors and Clippers have held real trade conversations this weekend on sending Kawhi Leonard back to Toronto, according to the league sources.
In discussions with the Clippers, sources say Toronto has expressed a preference in dealing Brandon Ingram to Los Angeles, as opposed to RJ Barrett,”
The 34-year-old Leonard is poised to enter the third and final year of the three-year, $149.5 million maximum contract extension he signed with the Clippers in 2024. He averaged a career-high 27.9 points per game to go along with 6.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 65 appearances last season.

Dallas is now the fourth team to be connected to Leonard this summer, joining the Raptors, San Antonio Spurs and Detroit Pistons.
A Leonard trade is beginning to feel more and more likely with every new report, and the potential landing spots that could wind up battling it out for his services make it all the more fascinating.
