Victor Wembanyama’s “I’m In Your Head” Backfires as Spurs Blow Game 4

The New York Knicks pulled off the greatest comeback in NBA Finals history on Wednesday night. Down 29 points in the third quarter, Madison Square Garden was silent as the San Antonio Spurs appeared poised to take both games 3 and 4 on the road and all the momentum with them back to Texas with the series tied at two.

Instead, everything flipped. New York went on a 55–25 run to complete a miraculous 107–106 comeback win, capped off by an OG Anunoby putback with just 1.2 seconds remaining to put themselves within one win of a championship.

It was as big of a swing in a game and series as you’re going to see, and a lot of it came after Victor Wembanyama taunted Mitchell Robinson and the Knicks with the “I’m in your head” claim in the second quarter.

From that point forward, the Spurs were outscored 87–69, and Wembanyama himself struggled—particularly in the fourth quarter, when things truly unraveled for San Antonio.

The 22-year-old Wembanyama finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds, one assist, and three blocks while shooting 9-of-25 in the Game 4 loss.

During his postgame interview, the superstar center was at a loss for words as to what had just transpired:

“I think it began before that. Can’t really explain it right now, I don’t know. I think it’s just execution, greediness of some sort. We clearly weren’t the most hungry in the second half.”

While he may have been in Robinson and all of New York’s heads at the time, Wembanyama’s taunting ultimately backfired in a big way, especially since he was one of—if not the main—culprits in the collapse.

The basketball world will now be watching to see if he and the Spurs can bounce back from such a devastating defeat when facing elimination at home on Saturday night.
