Just when you thought Shohei Ohtani had pretty much done it all, he continues to one-up himself and amaze the baseball world in the process.
After taking the vast majority of his first two years as a Los Angeles Dodger off from pitching, the two-way superstar’s return to the mound in 2026 has somehow seen him look better than ever before.
He maintained his ridiculous sub-1.00 ERA on Wednesday night thanks to six shutout innings against a strong Arizona Diamondbacks lineup that could only muster two hits along the way. It was more of the same that we’ve seen all season from Ohtani, but catcher Will Smith’s postgame comments were a reminder of just how rare what he’s doing truly is.
“Yeah, it’s incredible. You know, he’s the best player that’s ever walked this earth. It’s fun to see it each and every day, going out there and competing, giving us six scoreless innings, getting on base a bunch. You know, doing that all the time, it’s really cool,”
The 31-year-old Ohtani is now sporting a 6-2 record to go with a 0.74 ERA and 67 strikeouts through 10 starts this season while, of course, continuing to produce at the plate, slashing .301 with 10 home runs and 33 RBI across 61 games played.

It truly is remarkable what Ohtani is doing, currently sitting as the NL MVP favorite while also being squarely in the mix for the NL Cy Young Award.
He’s already won four MVPs and two championships, but adding a Cy Young would feel different and only further illustrate how special an athlete we’re witnessing.
Cristopher Sanchez, Jacob Misiorowski, and Paul Skenes, among others, will be tough to beat, but we’ve seen time and time again that it’s even harder to beat out Ohtani.
