Is Mike Babcock Really an Option for the Edmonton Oilers?

The Edmonton Oilers’ ongoing hunt for a new head coach continues to generate buzz, and for a moment this week, it included a familiar — and controversial — figure: Mike Babcock. As the team waits for clarity on whether Bruce Cassidy could become available out of Vegas, the rumor mill has expanded to include a wide spectrum of potential candidates.

Babcock’s name entered the conversation during a recent Oilers Now segment, where host Bob Stauffer and former NHL executive Brian Lawton explored the possibility following Edmonton’s decision to move on from Kris Knoblauch. Lawton suggested that with Stan Bowman now leading the front office, the idea of revisiting a coach seeking redemption might not be off the table.

From a résumé standpoint, Babcock is among the most accomplished coaches in modern NHL history. His career includes a Stanley Cup victory with Detroit and Olympic gold medals with Team Canada, achievements that place him in elite company. However, his reputation has taken hits in recent years, particularly following controversies tied to his relationships with players in both Toronto and Columbus.

He was called out for forcing Mitch Marner to name the laziest player on the Maple Leafs. In Columbus, he asked players to let him go through their phones for photos. It was all really odd, and he never fully recovered from those incidents.

For an Oilers roster centered around stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the debate is layered. A demanding, structured coach could bring accountability and edge, but there are legitimate concerns about how that approach would be received in a high-pressure, win-now environment.

Any momentum behind the idea was quickly halted, however. TSN insider Darren Dreger reached out directly to Babcock, who made it clear he has no intention of returning, saying he is retired and enjoying life away from the bench.

Babcock is just the latest name to surface when it comes to the Oilers and their search for a new head coach. After relieving Kris Knoblauch of his duties, Edmonton has been linked to former Vegas Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy. Ex-Leafs coach Craig Berube and former New York Rangers bench boss Peter Laviolette.
