Mariners Acquire Brendan Donovan in 3-Team Trade with Cardinals, Rays

The Seattle Mariners bolstered their lineup Monday, acquiring versatile infielder/outfielder Brendan Donovan from the St. Louis Cardinals in a three-team deal that also involved the Tampa Bay Rays. The swap moves five players and two competitive-balance draft picks, bringing significant change to all three rosters.

R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports writes, “Donovan is under team control through the 2027 season, which helps explain why the Mariners had to give up Cijntje and Williamson to complete the deal.”

Seattle sent infielder Ben Williamson to Tampa Bay, while prospects Jurrangelo Cijntje and Tai Peete, along with the Mariners’ 2026 Competitive Balance Round B pick (68th overall), went to St. Louis. The Cardinals also received Rays outfield prospect Colton Ledbetter and a 72nd overall draft pick.

Cijntje is a switch-pitcher who can clear 90 mph with either arm. He was Seattle’s first-round pick in 2024. He joins a strong group of Cardinals pitching prospects, which include Liam Doyle, Hunter Dobbins, Richard Fitts, Yhoiker Fajardo, Brandon Clarke, Blake Aita, and Jack Martinez.

Donovan, 29, was an All-Star in 2025, hitting .287 with 10 home runs and a .775 OPS. A multi-position player, he has started 202 games at second base, 139 in left field, and has experience at third base and right field. Mariners president Jerry Dipoto praised Donovan as “a combination of offensive skill, defensive versatility, consistency, and baseball instincts” that aligns with Seattle’s roster needs.

MLBTradeRumors writes:

“Donovan was a case where the St. Louis front office wouldn’t have to worry about the contract and could focus on simply bringing back as much talent as possible. With his modest salary and inability to block trades, the Cards could scour the league to see what teams were willing to pay in terms of prospect capital. Since Donovan can play all over the diamond, with experience at all four infield positions and the outfield corners, almost any contender could fit him onto the roster.”

The Mariners, who fell just short of the 2025 World Series, lost key infielders Eugenio Suárez and Jorge Polanco in free agency. Donovan’s contact-based approach and positional flexibility provide depth while allowing the club to integrate younger players like top shortstop prospect Colt Emerson and first-base incumbent Josh Naylor. “Donovan’s appeal becomes clear. His multi-positional abilities will allow the club to bounce him around depending on who else is healthy and producing,” Darragh McDonald writes.

For the Cardinals, the trade adds pitching and outfield prospects to support their rebuild, including switch-pitcher Cijntje, who will focus on right-handed work moving forward, and Peete, a 20-year-old outfielder with power-speed upside.

The Rays gain Williamson as a near-term solution at third base and added infield depth. “He’s a fantastic third baseman who would likely be earmarked for a future Gold Glove Award if he could hit more.”

While Donovan won’t solve all of Seattle’s lineup questions, he immediately strengthens the middle of the order and offers defensive versatility as the Mariners aim to return to the AL Championship series and chase their first World Series title.
